Advancing medicine - it's all relative

Advancing medicine - it’s all relative Image

At Credabl, we take great pride in having a deep understanding of the medical industry. In particular we’ve been keeping a close watch on the amazing technological advancements in the sector. From our previous 4-part blog series Into the Future to How Virtual Reality is being used to save lives. But what we can’t forget, is that medical advances can be relative. In the privileged world, we are seeing endless possibilities while in less developed nations, just the basics are significant improvements.

We chatted to two healthcare organisations at the two ends of the spectrum, both of which are embracing responsibility to better the world.

“If you have the ability to save a life, you have the responsibility to do so”

There are a large number of countries across the world that do not have access to medical professionals or equipment but organisations such as Radiology Across Borders (RAB) are helping to provide crucial support in countries such as Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Vietnam and Cambodia. Credabl is proud to be a partner of RAB.

As Suresh de Silva, co-founder and chairman of RAB, says, “We believe that if you have the ability to save a life, you have the responsibility to do so and our four key pillars reflect that: we help to train local doctors, we educate the doctors through online courses, we conduct valuable research and we help improve crucial infrastructure through the provision of equipment and expertise in the countries that we currently support”

Australia as a nation is blessed with some of the finest and most educated talent in the world and it is partners like RAB who bring valuable care to people who would not ordinarily have access to this level of support.

“Cord blood and tissue stem cells can only be collected at birth for potential future use”

Cell Care has been catching the eye of obstetricians and GPs across Australia, as a leading Australian company that is seeking to improve lives via cell blood and tissue therapies. They provide an end-to-end service to collect, cryogenically store and release cord blood and tissue, the nutrient rich fluid that is left in the umbilical cord and placenta immediately after birth. To date, releases have been for both approved treatments (e.g. leukaemia, neuroblastoma), and for registered clinical trials (e.g. type 1 diabetes, cerebral palsy).

Why? According to David Wragg, Head of Business Development at Cell Care, “Cord blood is a particularly rich source of hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs), which have the ability to regenerate blood and the immune system, and have potential regenerative medicine applications. Because of their ‘youth’, stem cells from umbilical cord blood are among the most flexible and potent in the body”.

Those stem cells, which are often discarded as medical waste during birth, have been used in over 40,000 transplants for more than 80 life threatening conditions. Research into how cord blood can assist to combat type 1 diabetes and cerebral palsy  in the future is well underway in Australia.

At Credabl, we take responsibility to lend responsibly so as to help medicos grow professionally, to build relationships in a network of partners who provide world class services to the industry, to reward our fiercely loyal clients and create a platform for those clients to communicate with us how they want, when they want.
